Why He Died

Atkinson, 37, a Windsor police officer, was fatally shot Friday when he approached two people involved in an alleged drug transaction near a convenience store parking lot.

Police have said Atkinson was dressed in street clothes and did not have his gun drawn. He flashed his badge at two teenagers and one of them allegedly shot the father of two.

I have always had a great deal of compassion for people, especially for those who risk their lives to save others.  I have learned allot about Constable John Atkinson since his passing.  In the area where he was killed the community has been leaving flowers, letters and stuff animals.  I left a jumbo dog and bear stuffed animal for John's children and a porcelain rose and letter for his wife Shelly.  The city held a candle light vigil along the river front and I brought my therapy dog Moses and a porcelain rose for John's mother.  A massive amount of officers came to John's funeral and I came and spoke to his family.  It is believed that John assisted in my sister's rescued when she attempted suicide but with all gratitude the officers saved my sister's life.
